How I work
Ich übernehme Softwareprojekte, die in Schieflage geraten sind, und bringe sie dahin, dass man sie wirklich ausliefern kann. Keine grüne Wiese, keine Vorzeige-Neubauten. Die verworrenen, halbfertigen, längst ausgelieferten Projekte, bei denen etwas leise kaputtgeht und keiner genau weiß, warum.
I take over software projects that have gone off the rails and get them to a state you can actually ship. Not greenfield showpieces. The tangled, half-finished, already-deployed kind, where something is quietly breaking and no one is quite sure why.
Das kann ich, weil ich beides gemacht habe: Ich habe jahrelang als Head of Engineering ein Team geführt — und nie aufgehört, selbst im Code zu arbeiten. Deshalb sehe ich schnell, wo das eigentliche Problem liegt: im Code oder drumherum. Oft ist es gar nicht der Code. Wer nur auf den Code schaut, stellt die falsche Diagnose. Die ist teuer: Das Projekt bleibt kaputt, während alle beschäftigt sind. Ich schaue auf das ganze System, nicht nur auf einen Ausschnitt.
I can do that because I've done both: for years I led a development team as Head of Engineering — and never once stopped working in the code myself. So when a project is in trouble, I see fast where the real problem lies: in the code, or around it. Often it isn't the code at all. Look only at the code and you make the wrong diagnosis. An expensive one — the project stays broken while everyone stays busy. I look at the whole system, not just one corner of it.
Ich analysiere die Symptome und beseitige die Ursachen. Ich habe genug Teams geführt, um zu wissen: Auf einem verfahrenen Projekt hat jeder das Beste aus der Zeit, den Informationen und dem Druck gemacht, die er hatte. Trotzdem ist etwas gebrochen. Meistens muss man keinen Menschen korrigieren, sondern eine Annahme oder einen Zwang, den alle geerbt und keiner je hinterfragt hat. Den finde ich — und räume ihn aus.
I analyse the symptoms and remove the causes. I've led enough teams to know it: on a struggling project, everyone did the best they could with the time, the information and the pressure they were handed. Something broke anyway. Most of the time it isn't a person that needs fixing, but an assumption or a constraint everyone inherited and no one had time to question. I find it — and clear it out.
Und wenn es hart wird — Termine, schwierige Entscheidungen, echter Druck —, bleibe ich ruhig und strukturiert. Ich lege die Optionen offen auf den Tisch, benenne die Risiken ehrlich und entscheide klar. Das zählt, wenn die Zeit knapp wird.
And when it gets hard — deadlines, tough calls, real pressure — I stay calm and structured. I put the options on the table, name the risks honestly, and make a clear call. That's what counts when time is short.
